Serving Negros Island since 2005
The Provincial Governments of Oriental Negros and Negros Occidental signed a Memorandum of Agreement in August 2005 to unify the island by achieving sustainable agriculture & rural development. The agreement aims to achieve sustainable resource
management and food security for smallholder communities based on diversified farm produce.
The agreement mandated the establishment of Provincial Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Board which shall formulate policies on food security, bio-security, rural development and bio diversity conservation. It also mandated the formation of Negros Island Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Foundation to implement the programs based on policies formulated by the SARD Board including funding mechanisms and farm conversion packages. Initially, both Provincial Governments of the Negros Island through NISARD Foundation shall pursue the following areas of cooperation as follows:
1) Joint Venture for Export
Processing Zone;
2) Legislation on Ban on Entry of Genetically Modified Organisms;
3)Commitment to Increase to 10% of Agricultural Lands to Organic Agriculture; and
4) Cooperation and coordination with Private Sector.
With this mandate, both Provincial Governments allocated P10 Million each as seed fund to support NISARD Foundation’s programs and activities.
- Project started in late 2007 La Carlota (Bais-Yubo area), La Castellana (Sag-ang) and Murcia (Anangue).
- Around 150 organic certified coffee farmers and around 300 hectares.
- Undergone trainings for organic production and IQCS (Internal Control System)
NISARD represented the province, together with other negros producer at the
IFEX (International Food Expo) trade fair through discussion about organic coffee.
A success due to attendance of 350 small farmers, academe, LGU’s heads of regional offices, DA Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat, IFOAM President Andre Leu, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Vice Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson and Negros Oriental representative Ms. Belina Villahermosa and
Vice Gov. Erwin Macias. Held at SMX Bacolod last September 5, 2016.
A partnership project with the Province of Negros Occidental
The project is engaged in the production of planting materials thru Plant Tissue Culture. It will help enhance plant production thru rapid propagation and assuring constituents and farmer disease free varieties. Promote the importance of agriculture among the youth in generating livelihood and employment, improving economic activities in the rural areas thus, accelerating rural development in the Negros Occidental and nearby provinces and at the same time will address food security issues.
An annual activity that showcases the gains on organic farming and as a strategy to aggressively campaign a sustainable farming practice.
This event also puts Negros in the map as a farm tourism destination.
